How often should your facility get an infrared inspection?
By Ashton Bott, Level III Certified Master Thermographer. Updated 2026.
Annual is the baseline. Here is how to decide whether your facility needs a tighter interval.
The baseline is annual
Most commercial and industrial facilities should inspect energized electrical equipment at least once every twelve months, which aligns with the NFPA 70B interval.
When to inspect more often
Higher risk and higher load environments, such as data centers, telecom sites, and manufacturing plants, often benefit from semi-annual inspection.
Shorter intervals, in some cases six months, can apply depending on equipment condition, a documented risk assessment, findings history, missed maintenance cycles, major component repairs, and AHJ or insurer requirements.
